The Duchess of Windsor’s ribald sense of humor made her a perfect partner in crime for Kenneth Jay Lane with whom she enjoyed a two-decade long friendship. Lane met the duchess in the 1960s through Harper’s Bazaar editor Diana Vreeland. The two saw each other in New York, where the duke and duchess kept an apartment at the Waldorf and at their villa in Paris. While the duchess enjoyed a world-famous fine jewelry collection she also enjoyed the many fashion pieces bestowed upon her by Kenneth (but promptly paid for by her husband the duke), many of which are still in production today.
